How I Survived.

When I was diagnosed with cancer for a second time, I dedicated myself to my research of the disease, spending hours and hours researching concepts I didn't understand and reading every article in every medical journal that I thought could help. All the information and insights which I gathered over those six months, including how I overcame my battle with cancer, are highlighted and explained in this book.

Cancer is not a death sentence

There are far too many people who needlessly lose their lives to cancer. People need to know that cancer is far from a death sentence, and that with the right management of treatment and therapy, even some of the most insurmountable odds can be beaten. Obviously, there will be people that get diagnosed far too late for anything to be done, but for the most part 9.6 million people that lose their lives each year, death could have, and perhaps even should have, been avoided.

Don't fear cancer

One of my biggest aims of this book was to remove some of the fear that we so instinctively give rise to whenever the topic comes up. No one wants to think or talk about cancer ”of course they don't. Even when I was diagnosed, I didn't want to talk about cancer. All I wanted to do was disappear and pretend that it didn't exist. The problem with pretending that something doesn't exist though, is that when the day comes that you realise it actually does, you're completely unprepared for it” like a deer in the headlights.

When cancer treatment goes wrong

In addition to explaining what I learnt about cancer and its various treatment options, I also highlight pitfalls in my own treatment. How it is possible that the medical community manages to get our healthcare wrong?

Why are we still struggling to find a cure for cancer?

Here is the answer: It takes an average of 17 years for research evidence to reach clinical practice (Time lags in translational research). There is a divide between research and practice and this divide needs to be crossed if we are to beat cancer permanently and turn the once feared disease into something that can be successfully treated.

Is there a better way?

Although there has been some progress with regards to for example immunotherapy research over the years, scientific and medical institutions are still far too resistant in investigating and implementing alternative and complementary treatment methods for cancer. This needs to change. By educating ourselves we will be in a position to challenge the current cancer treatment protocols and stand up with one voice demanding that research in the right direction is accelerated so that we can find a cure for cancer.
